I have had exactly the same problem but I can't figure out how you fixed it as I can't find the 'Disk Management in the Computer Management window'... Was wondering if it would be possible if you could please tell me in more detail how to get there? Is it in the control panel somewhere or....? Thank you.

What I ended up doing was changing the letter associated with my CD/DVD drive from the default (D) to a letter that I knew wasn't in use. I then instantly changed it back to D.

My CD/DVD drive shows up at the bottom of the disk management window. The steps to change the drive letter are:

    1. Right-click on the drive, and click "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
    2. Select the drive you want to change (again, this was "D:" for me) and click "Change..."
    3. A smaller box pops up, and a check-box is filled next to "Assign the following drive letter:" - this displays as "D" for me - click the drop-down menu here and pick a letter that isn't in use.
    4. Click "OK". If you're sure no programs are reliant on the mappings, click "Yes" on the prompt that pops up.
    5. Repeat steps 1-4, and change the letter back to the original (D).

Hope this helps! Please note that I'm in no way qualified to offer computing advice and/or support. The above set of instructions merely dictates how I fixed my own problem, so it may not work for you. If you're really unsure, get a professional to fix it!

Awesomeness! Awesomeness! Awesomeness! My DVD drive has been increasingly finicky over the past few years and often required reloading the discs several times, exploring, and other fooling around in order to get it to play a movie, but it usually would after a few attempts and false starts. I figured it was something about the drive going out...the laser, the carriage, the turntable motor, or that part of the frame was bent and binding the disc. Tonight it stopped working all together and I have been searching for hours for a solution. The advice from all the so-called gurus didn't help. I did a scan disk, uninstalled the drivers, tried to update the drivers, restarted, cleaned the laser head, checked event logs for errors, did a registry change, tried the MS fix it tool for DVD troubleshooting....and none of that helped. You know what got it working again instantly??

PastorofMuppets suggestion to remap the drive letter. I changed the DVD drive letter from "F" to "M", and that phucker worked instantly! Thanks dude!
