Can't select it, can't highlight it.
What other approach is there to accomplish this?

While you are on the Services Tab in Task Manager, scroll until you find the listing for BITS.
Right click on it; is the option to "Stop Service" clickable or grayed out?

If it is grayed out from there you have a corrupted registry key.

go through the list of services and make sure all of the following are set to Automatic or Manual:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC), System Event Notification, Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions, COM+ Event System, DCOM Server Process Launcher

Try to start these services (of not started yet). All start fine?

Start REGEDIT and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters
What do you see on the right side of screen?

See Post #3: BITS Error 2: The System cannot find the file specified
Is yours like Kaktussoft's?

It may work to merge his reg file of that key found as an attachment at the bottom of Post #5.
This file is x64, do you have the windows 7 x64 OS version? You have your motherboard listed where your OS should be in your system specs.

If you do go ahead and merge, please make a restore point, and a backup of your registry before you do.

My BITS got mangled last week on WinXP machine, took me a couple days to figure out why MSE wouldn't auto or manual update.
Am using ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT)to backup registry every day.

Have you had malware problems recently?
I check for malware frequently, using both Malwarebytes and superantispyware.. I haven't specifically noticed any problem until now.

Same answer for me.

I had trouble finding how to get my HP Laserjet 4 printer to work in Windows 7. My research indicates it would run in Vista using built in drivers, but I didn't have or use Vista. I also tried driversguide, and HP site just says "supported" When I used one of the available earleir drivers I...

Driver won't install on HP Laserjet 6L x64
I can't seem to get Windows to recognize my printer (connected from parallel to USB cable). I try to install the driver from the Windows list of printers (I had to do an update of the list), but it says that the driver is not signed, when it is clearly from Microsoft and signed. What can I do?
Laserjet driver
I have an elderly (approx 3 years old) , but perfectly functioning HP Laserjet 1000. I understand that HP have not, and will not, issue a Win 7 driver update for this machine. I do not want to have to buy a new printer, when this one works brilliantly. My question is, if I install XP on a separate...
HP Laserjet driver
I have an HP Laserjet 1020 that I can't get to work with my OS (Windows 7 Beta 32-bit). I found the driver on the HP site, but it will not function with this Beta system, and Windows will not recognize the printer as a printer; it just comes up as a device. How do I solve this problem? I...
