Welcome aboard, JH17 :)
You may follow the steps :
- Open Command Prompt at Startup
- Type: diskpart > enter
- Type: list volume > enter
- Type: select volume > enter (the volume that is write protected)
- Type: attributes disk clear readonly > enter
It may work.
Edit: You may also see Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Hello JH17 . You said that your hard drive is showing up in disk management ?
- Open a Command Prompt at Startup
- Type : diskpart > enter
- Type : list disk > enter
- Type : select disk > enter
- Type : attributes disk clear readonly> enter
Does it work now ? Or still write protected ?
EDIT : may we have a snipshot of your disk management window ?
ok it comes up with the disk and i typed in; Disk 1 and pressed enter then it came up with a heap of stuff and one of them was format so i typed in that and it said no volume selected
it came up diskpart failed to clear attributes
here is a print screen of my computer management hope it helps
yeah it one of the portable ones and nah i have had it for years
