I have never hear of a virus doing physical damage to a piece of hardware. A virus is a program. Hardware is controlled by little programs like drivers, bios, operating system ect. The virus program will infest these other programs and do many unwanted things; one being making hardware not work properly or not at all.
Note: Because I have never heard of it before doesn't mean that it has never happened.

Generally speaking for the actual physical hardware itself, this is extremely unlikely so I have to say NO to this. However, much hardware (e.g. drives) has control programs built-in in the form of firmware, and it is possible for certain viruses to damage this (the BIOS falls in this category).

Having said that, whilst the possibility exists, it is extremely unlikely that this would happen.
