Disabling Touchpad on Lenovo G570 Laptop

I have a Lenovo G570 laptop (Win7 64 bit) with a Synaptics touchpad I would like to permanently disable or disable when a USB mouse is plugged in. This machine doesn't have a switch to turn off the touchpad and I never remember to hit Fn/F6 until I screw up my typing because I dragged my thumb over the stupid touchpad. I've tried programs that briefly shut off the touchpad when a key is pressed but they didn't work for two reasons: one, I often brush the touchpad before I hit a key, and, two, my USB mouse also temporarily shuts off.

The only selection in the driver is to permanently turn it off but when I select that, I get a popup saying, "You are about to disable the only active Synaptics pointing device." That makes me doubly nervous since programs that shut off the touchpad also affect the mouse and I’m afraid that if the touchpad is permanently turned off at the driver, it will also permanently shut off the mouse, effectively bricking my laptop. Any suggestions?

I'm not talking about drivers...

Try going to control panel, mouse, device settings tab and check the box I highlighted here,

There should be a little box to check to disable touchpad when a mouse is plugged in. Click apply then okay.

If there's not an icon in the taskbar, go into control panel and click mouse and follow the above

Again, I DON'T have that option. I get the box just as you show except the highlighted portion in NOT there! And I do have the latest driver.

OK, Thank you for your patience.

It seems that some OEM's have chosen to remove that feature.

I found a registry work around to re-enable that feature if you are comfortable trying it.

As always when you mess with the registry, you should at the very least,

The Mouse Properties window I posted above is from my HP laptop, I did a clean install on and installed these drivers,

Synaptics TouchPad Driver HP Pavilion g7-1365dx Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

These are the generic drivers from Synaptics,

Greetings Lady Fitzgerald,

I don't know if this is going to help you but it did work for me. I permanently disabled the touchpad because I never liked it since I type a lot as I am a civil servant. Here is what I did.

Opened "Device Manager" in control panel and expand "mice and other pointing devices." right-clicked "synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad" and selected "disable".

Now my touchpad doesn't work but wireless logitech mouse does... just the way i love it. And by the way, I've also tried what you went through. But please remember to first create system backup by any way convenient to you, because doing what I did, may not be your exactly what you prefer. That is, if you want to enable the touchpad again; because in my case, right-clicking the "touchpad" in "device manager" doesn't show "enable option" maybe because I opted to click ok to a dialog popup that says I am about to permanently disable ......

But I did it because, like I said, I never liked the touchpad but I love laptops.

Hey Derekimo,

I hope you are not quoting A Guy's to imply that I got where I am through his post you quoted.

Anyways, I did what I explained earlier out of frustration, and not according to "A Guy's" post, because this is what happened when I tried what's in A Guy's post (which I already read elsewhere), open "control panel" click "mouse" click "device settings" and checked the box labeled "disable internal pointing device when external usb pointing device is attached." Now for some unknown reason, at least in my case (if you search, there are plenty others like mine) this DOES NOT work for me. Even after checking and uchecking the box many times with a reboot, still DOES NOT work at all.

Hence, doing what I did.

I hope I am not offending anyone here. Just trying to be helpful with God Almighty as my witness.

I am not implying anything towards your post.

She was still looking for a solution and I ran across that, I was mainly quoting that for the touchfreeze option, she has tried most everything else.

Thank you so much Derekimo for you kind and soothing words. And I do hope Fitzgerald get her solution soon. It is so annoying when you type while the touchpad keep messing things up. I am now thinking about that "touchfreeze" thing. maybe it is a more convenient solution for me too. this wireless mouse is not going to remind me to get a replacement battery and i would hate to get stuck once its battery runs out of juice.

I'm not ignoring you guys; I just haven't had a chance to check out any of the recent suggestions (I was up much of the night dealing with an ant invasion; so far, I'm winning now that I found where the little monsters were getting in).

I tried something similar to Touchfreeze and it didn't work for two reasons:

1. I would often drag my thumb over the *&^%$! touchpad before I started typing.

2. Not only was the touchpad briefly disabled, so was the mouse (the touchpad is P/S2 and the mouse is USB so what the heck is up with that?). That was even more annoying than the touchpad.

have you tried what i did as explained in my earlier post to you? my touchpad is permanently disabled and now works with usb mouse - wireless. have also tried wired usb mouse and also works. regards and God Bless,
