extend desktop to TV messes up desktop icons

When I plug in the laptop RGB connection to my 42" plasma, sometimes (maybe 50% of the time) the icons on my desktop get pushed all the way over to the right hand side, which are then covered by whatever desktop gadgets I have. Annoying. When I disconnect the TV, icons return to their proper placements on the left hand side.

The Fn function key + F5 switches between the dispaly modes: 'Duplicate desktop', 'Extend', 'Projector only', Disconnect projector'. There doesn't seem to be any pattern, it's random in its manifestation. I always extend not duplicate, so I can watch media on the TV and still have computer stuff on the PC. I haven't updated any drivers lately, it's just been occuring more and more frequently. There shouldn't be any reason why this happens. How can I cure this please?

When you right click on the desktop and click on View do you have have Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid checked? I would play with those 2 settings to prevent this. Barring an easy fix, you could always use Fences which would fix this problem. A Guy

Thanks, A Guy, I always have autoarrange off, but the other was ticked. I've unticked it and i'll test it. Good discovery on the Fences, by teh way. Thanks & regards

You cloud also try with auto arrange on, if the other setting doesn't help. Let us know how it goes. A Guy

With auto-arrange, all the icons flew over to the far left hand side of the screen. without they all flew over to the far right hand side. I've installed the free version of Fences and although it's something else installed on my system and something else taking up space and resources, I can't fault it - it does what it says on the tin. I'll mark this as solved - thank you gentlemen.
