    A couple of more questions:

    1. Are you plugging the USB directly into the USB port of the computer, or via a hub?
    2. Do you use the same antivirus on both netbook and dekstop? Trying disabling them temporarily to see if they aren't blocking access to the USB.
    3. Are you able to run a chkdsk on the USB drive?

Adaware is known for causing problems. The same can be said for MuckAfee.

I recommend uninstalling both of them.

Install MSE,Microsoft Security Essentials, which causes zero problems and is excellent.

Link to MSE in my signature.

    Incidentally, Adaware is rather useless.

Try disabling McCrappee, and see if that helps.

    To run chkdsk:

    1. Click
    2. In search box, type cmd
    3. Right-click on cmd in the list, and choose Run as administrator
    4. If your USB drive is F:, type chkdsk /R F: and hit enter

EDIT : I agree with Karls suggestion -replace your current AV with MSE.

    1. MSE is FREE.

    2. Muckafee is NOT built-in. Just:
Control Panel | Programs and Features | scroll down the list until you find Muckafee. | right-click on MuckAfee | choose UNINSTALL.

    If you would rather:
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Use MSE on ALL of your computers.

MSE is the AV I use, I install, I recommend.

    kmjnhh,

Since you have had zero or rather worthless AV protection, then :

There is the possibility that your computers, both of them, are infected.

First, get rid of Adaware and Muckaffee and install MSE.

After MSE makes its initial scan, which will happen automatically, then let us know how things go.
