WD My Passport Essential 500GB External Keeps Disconnecting from USB3

    Hi all,

So today i brought a new External hard drive today and started copying files to it (as you do)
from my PC (usb2) it worked fine,
but then when i connect it to my latop (TOSHIBA satellite L840) it keeps disconnecting within 5 seconds of copying regardless of file size ONLY when its connected to a USB 3 socket
i can copy stuff to and from the laptop using USB 2.0, but for some reason it doesnt like my USB3 ports :/

all software/firmware updated, usb3 drivers installed, windows even tells me it can peform faster if i connect to the usb3 port (silly windows

any help would be GREATLY appreciated

    thanks in advanced :)

If it is giving you the message that the drive can perform faster, it sounds like the computer doesn't have the USB 3.0 drivers installed for those ports. Most USB 3.0 ports have separate, specific drivers to enable the 3.0 speeds.

Its definately driver related - who is the manufacturer of the driver?

Your motherboard doesn't show as supporting USB3:

Laptop? Ahh, I misread your system specifications.

Unfortunately, I have seen instances of WD's misbehaving on USB3 ports. The only thing I can suggest is this:
