HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m is not detected by HP software

I recently bought HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m, tried to install on windows 7 from HP installation cd-rom was not detected, d/led fresh setup file from HP website also failed to detect, from pc tried to add network printer easiely detected, I can now print direct from pc to printer, it is listed on devices and printers, also detected on my daughter laptop using same HP installation cd. on my pc It is found as webpage by this address : http://192.168.1.30/index.htm?cat=network&page=wi​redIfc

I need to install HP installation software for scanning and other options.

It is not connected to pc by usb, It is wired connected to router.

This is going to sound rediculous, but it's worked perfect for me, a number of times.


The error is usally when one of my users has had a new laptop and they've plugged their HP Officejet 4500 g510g-m in without calling me first, so i can get them to ONLY plug it in during the install. If they do, we usually just buy a new printer. This is the single worst printer i have ever tried to install in my entire life (and i've done a few). Why it would cease to work on something as trivial as this is, is a result of extremely poor design.

What i have found works (discovered purely by mistake because i installed the wrong driver) is below. The instructions below are the exact same environment as what happened to me the first time it worked, and i do it this way all the time now:


Note: Please bear in mind that this has only been tried in situations where the install program tells you to connect the printer and when you do, nothing changes. The screen just keeps telling you to plug it in. Usually as a result of plugging it in at some other time without running the install program first. For other situations, i dont know.


1. Unplug the printer from the laptop


2. Download the WRONG driver (i install the same driver i accidentally installed the first time which was the fully featured software for the HP Officejet 4500 g510a-f for Windows 7 64-bit (i believe this is the wireless model). 3. When it tells you to plug in the printer, plug it in. It wont work. Use Task Manager to end the install (another poor design). Do this by right clicking the task bar, click Task Manager, click the applications tab, right-click the installer and click Go To Process... then click End Process. Also end anything else that begin with hpz (or just hp), they should all be on top of each other in the list. Leave the printer plugged in


4. Donload the CORRECT driver (HP Officejet 4500 g510 g-m) from here: Software & driver downloads HP Officejet 4500 All-in-One Printer - G510g | HP® Support and extract/install it as normal.


5. When it gets to the "Connect your printer" section, IT WILL JUST WORK. Give it a maximum of 3 minutes (sometimes it takes that long to detect the fact you've plugged it in, depending on your computer speed/ USB speed etc. i've found).

Connecting HP 4500 G510g-m Wirelessly through router 9-10-14
Windows 7 (64)

1. Downloaded fullfeature software from CD supplied with printer. Followed all onscreen download instructions. This can also be downloaded from HP support. Then disconnected USB cable.
2. Connected printer to router w/ethernet cable. Waited a couple minutes for router and printer to connect, then from printer control panel opened; Tools>Network setup>Advanced setup>IP settings>Manual>IP address
>192.168.001.103 .Your address will be different. I did this to have the address for verification later.
3. Start>All programs; scroll to HP and highlight.
Scroll to Officejet 4500 G510g-m and highlight;
Scroll to Add A Device and left click once.
This opens User Account Control; click YES to allow HP Installer Setup to make changes.
This opens Hardware Setup Guide; check Do not display setup guide, printer is already setup (unless you
need to set yours up)
Click NEXT.
This opens Connection Type; check Wired Connection using an Ethernet connection.
Click NEXT.
This opens Network Setup; Don’t check Continue with installation will connect printer later (unless you
need to set yours up).
Click NEXT.
This opens Found Network Printers; a window will (should) display a list of available printers
(in my case, just the one) along with its IP address;
Officejet 4500 G510g-m192.168.001.103 . This is where you confirm the IP address you
got from your printer earlier. Left click on your printer to highlight it and click NEXT.
This added a printer in Printers and Devices as; HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (2), and
pre-selected it as the Default Printer.
4. Don't know if it made any difference, but I turned the printer off and unplugged it. Then I
unplugged the router and let them sit for a few minutes. Plugged the router in, waited a few;
plugged the printer in, waited a few; then turned the printer on.
5. Opened HP Solution Center and it shows the printer as being connected; AND IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NOTE: I tried to duplicate this. When I got to Found Network Printers, nothing was listed in the
window. Neither Refresh List, nor Advanced Search Options in that window did any good. And I'm NOT going to 'Remove Device' to try again . Good luck! D H

>> Went through this nonsense with several HP 4500s (different Sub-Models) when trying to install (Setup) the "latest" available Full-Features SW and Drivers downloaded package. Finally, after some Windows 7 poking-around, "while the various HP scripts were running"... managed to successfully install the HP drivers (printer object / imager (scanner) object / DOT4 (USB-port-related) object / wireless transceiver object / internal PrintServer object) and the HP Solution Center (to remotely access Printer Settings / Ink-Levels / Et al) SUCCESSFULLY... on THREE different PCs in the same Client home. Two Laptops printing wirelessly via the Client's local GDI/Router/WiFi Box, and one Desktop printing via USB cable.
>> The KEY is to realize that HP did NOT have their 3RD-Party low-bid (foreign) Coders write ANY Drivers for Windows 7! When one unpacks the HP files into the (idiotic) ..\User\AppData\Local\Temp location (FYI: do NOT change the Default, or the poorly-written scripts will NEVER find their files!)... one can quickly discover ALL the driver files are for XP or Vista ONLY. Fortunately, Microsoft Coders DID write good stuff, and Windows7 'can' recognize and install such older Drivers in "Compatability Mode" automatically, when needed... without the User needing to do anything manually.
>> A "part" of HP's vast Organization 'has' all-too-slowly paid attention-to the Hundreds-Of-Thousands(!) of complaints from Users who want to actually keep-using their "PAID-FOR" HP 4500 Printers. [ HP and Dell and Etc 'Official Position' is that WE should "buy a New Model of Printer" whenever there is a new version of Windows! That would make everyone's life easier, eh? That is what they will keep telling us... And the MFGs "DO" have a point. Their older-Printer's Drivers had-to be written to work-with Legacy nonsense 'inherited' from the EarlyDays of Computers; nonsense like "DOT4" and it's predecessors... look up the details on that little cutie if you want to be scared. Their NEWer printers have MUCH-better Drivers and SW, because newer Windows8.n and newer Distributions of GNU/Linux were Coded "correctly" for a change. *And, of course, re-coded to use modern TPM Chips and encryption, to please the Feds... and help reduce Robot-PCs being used by Ch***se Hackers to attack our Military and Corporate Servers.]
>> SO... part of HP has actually developed an "Install Wizard" that we should ALL download and use. BUT... first y'all have to find, or download-and-find the HP "Level 4" UN-installer script. [ And after running it, those of us with more experience should do further MANUAL cleanout of HP Files, and objects in the Windows 7 Registry. As always, BACK UP YOUR Windows 7/HDD 1ST! ]
>> Be aware that the Install Wizard REQUIRES a www connection, and it will take a good while for it to download the Files Package(s), which it will run afterward. [ And yes, it downloads a Fresh Copy each time; NOT checking 1ST to see if there is already a Good set of Files on your HDD. HP coders chose to do this Purposely, and to have the Users run the Level4 UNinstaller script, 1ST... to try to start out with a 'clean sheet'. ] *Do NOT connect the USB cable from your Printer UNTIL script asks you to!.. and it will, because 'direct' USB connection is REQUIRED for successful Installation.
>> The other SERIOUS fault in the HP 4500 "install" scripts is: they will try to install a new-Version of Adobe Flash Player, from an Adobe web-page/file that, effectively, DOES NOT EXIST! [ FYI: the "HP Solution Center" c**pola runs within a Customized Web-Browser 'engine'... NOT as a normal / installed Windows Program! That web-browser BS-solution REQUIRES the latest Adobe Flash Player. ]
>> Worse yet, the Coder bozos's scripts do NOT check 1ST(!) whether you already HAVE the latest Flash Player... the script just trys to access a non-Existant page/file...... and a "process" just sits there, running in the 'background' of Windows 7, STUCK FOREVER. One can open up the Windows 7 task Manager, and see it.
>> END that TASK(!) as soon as you see it running in Windows 7 Task Manager.... then, and ONLY-then, will the Installation Scripts continue. And there are NINE scripts which run, one after the other... UNLESS you have chosen a 'Custom' install, and UN-checked the SW items you do-not-want-or-need (!), such as OCR / WebPrinting / ETC. *Your specific Model may run a different number of scripts, but one can "watch" each script and it's sub-objects pop into and out-of existance in the Windows 7 Task Manager.
>> If you already have your 4500 setup and running, just bypass the 'Set up Printer' screen. At the tail end of one of the last scripts, a screen will appear that helps you set up ALL of your wireless configuration items (if, you will be printing wirelessly from your specific PC/Laptop). *When you have those done, it will ask if you want to Print a page... DO that, and, DO print the NetworkSettings page, so that you will have the Details for later when needed. Good Luck, everyone... your gonna need it.
