I have an Asus G50vt-x5... So maybe that will help?.. :)
Did you buy it from BestBuy - or from someone who bought it at BestBuy?
Yeah I got it from bestbuy
OK - Asus makes a distinction at their support site. I am in the middle of moving and it is time to eat. Back soon.

hey nightmare, could you please explain more thoroughly what you did? my dvd drive is not recognizing any disks on my g50vt-xt laptop, and i just upgraded to windows 7 to. Seems to be the exact same problem, ive been stuck without my drive for a while now.

Did you say that you just re installed windows 7 to your laptop to solve it?

    thanks

except i just realized nightmare is banned, so that doesnt help me much lol

    Went Back

I had a stuttering video (every 20 minutes, kernel would crash and re-start), DVD drive would only be recognized every once and a while and would fail with Windows 7. I did everything by the book when upgraded, new BIOS, new drivers, even went to safe mode and deleted prior drivers for no conflicts, etc, etc.

I re-formatted and did a second clean win 7 install. I gave up, went back to 64 bit Vista and on my G50VT it works perfectly. I got Win 7 as a gift, and I gave it a very good effort to get it to work. But I hate constant tweaking, and hate bugs... I spent too much money on this computer to not have it work and do things like video well, that is exactly why I got this model.

I want to love Win 7, I am sure it is awesome on newer machines.
