Wireless Adapters won't install, plus Device Manager shows empty.

I've had this problem with my Windows 7 64bit OS ever since it updated a while back (I'm not sure what updates).

The wireless adapter that was already installed stopped working, then two successive new wireless adapters (both usb) failed to work as well. The computer just refuses to detect them (although it beeps to indicate it knows a device has been plugged in)

A lot of the methods I searched for to fix this issue told me to look in Device Manager, which is empty... which then sent me on another search to figure out how to fix that.

None of the methods I've found have worked (Editing permissions etc).

I'm tempted to just re-install Windows, but I thought I'd ask here first.

I'm not sure what information is required to help me, so if you ask I'll try my best to supply.
