replacing CPU causing issues?

I upgraded my cpu to an extreme edition in my laptop and only thing I changed was CPU. memory SSD/HDD everything else in place didnt take them off or anything. after changing CPU I power it up but blackscreen and beeps 4 times which indicated failure memory read/write.

now, my RAM worked fine with the other CPU and I didnt touch it but thinking it might relaly be RAM failure I leave with 4GB (single ram stick) in instead of 8 GB (2x4) and booted up just fine. weird part now is when I got into windows it used VGA display instead of my crossfire graphics card, the hell?

after a reboot, I was running on my graphics card but only now one card is detected from the crossfire and in BIOS, only 1 card is detected too. I have 4 RAM slots and if i were to add anymore RAM, it will not boot. however if I were to put single stick of RAM doesnt matter which RAM stick at which RAM slot, as long as its single stick, it boots just fine.

just what is going on here? some say to reset CMOS should i try doing that?

The recommend procedure is to reinstall windows after any major hardware change...ie cpu or mobo. This will generally take care of such issue's. I betting it has to do with the chipset driver for the mobo.

Does your mobo support the new CPU?

yes both cpu supported by the chipset, came out at the same generation release from intel. but how does it explain why crossfire is not detected anymore and only 1 GPU is detected instead, and how more than 1 stick of RAM will result in non booting, blackscreen?

It's not the chipset but the BIOS that must support the CPU. If it is a laptop, I'm pretty sure that there is no way in heck it will use an extreme processor. It's rare to find one that accepts a different CPU than the one already installed and a few select others (the CPUs the manufacturer can install in different flavors of the same model)

Can you say the maker and model of the laptop?

it does support extreme processor.. M18x dell alienware, supports both 2920xm and 2960xm.. while m18x R2 supports 3940xm and 3920xm. m17x R2 supports 920xm and 940xm. sagers flagship laptop supports desktop extreme processor 3960x 3930k and 3970x.

it is not the chipset as HM67 which is mobile chipset and supports those line of CPU. as for my machine highest is 2960xm but im using 2920xm. is it a faulty processor? or socket over tighten causing this issues? my thought was faulty CPU but i dont see how it can boot and still work with just 1 ram and 1 GPU, this is so messed up, never seen this kind of problem before.

try resetting bios. When you change CPU it is recommended to reset BIOS/CMOS as settings for the older CPU may be annoying the new one.

If by placing again the older processor there is no problem, I'd say the new is faulty. IF you say stuff disappears from BIOS as well... then it is a hardware issue.

yep I went to reset my cmos battery and lost all my settings, but still only 1 showed up. was hoping that would work :'(

I end up replacing my old CPU back and now all working fine.. a partially broken CPU? never had this issue b4 lol. I could overclock it to 4.5ghz just fine, but it still only takes 1 GPU and 1 RAM so messed up.
