I am going to have to disagree with the bad rep for the MSI board, I am personally using this MSI Z77A-G43 with an i7 CPU clocked at 4.2ghz.

I have had one problem with it and that was using the corsair ram, now solved when I replaced them with the Gskill Ripjaws.

The component quality on this motherboard looks mid to high range to me certainly not shoddy and with plenty of tolerance for overclocking, I would currently rate them above Asrock.

I think your problem definitely points towards your PSU.

Tbh, the psu was the only thing I sort of skimped on, it was a fair amount cheaper than other 700w psu's.
Aha! This is a bad sign. If your wallet isn't hurting when you buy the PSU, it is a crappy one. When you buy a new one look for those with 80 plus certification (I see you want to buy a certified one, well done), possibly ones that have been reviewed by professionals (with tests about load and voltage drop).
PSU is the heart of you machine, supposed to provide power to every device, any "mistake" it makes could overload (destroy) some of your hardware. Saving money on it is not recommended.

I do heavy gaming, often for many hours in a session. I've spotted what looks like a good board from asrock, tons of features and a good price? And I think I'm going to buy a new psu anyway to be safe.
What board? Extreme4 and Extreme6 are pretty good (for z77 chipset anyway). I'll just warn you about a (very minor) detail: the board is dark brown, not black like the connectors.

My brother just told me there was a bit of an electrical storm last night, but my pc was off. Do psu's have have any sort of protection built into them?
Good ones do have protections, but the devices supposed to protect your hardware in those situations are called UPS and filter the power from wall outlet before it reaches the PSU and screen.

Thanks for all the advice guys... *sigh* it's just my luck I guess... You know the "bad luck Brian" meme? Well about 10 years ago my mates used to call me "bad luck Brent"... That should be my school photo in that meme!! Well I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a new psu (cooler master gx750 80+, got some good reviews) and mobo (asrock z77 extreme) both seem to have got great reviews and are in my price range. Can't thank you guys enough for replying.
AS Rock is made by Asus, got my brother in law an AsRock AM3+ board for a inexpensive PC as he is skint to drag him screaming into the 21st century century. Had a Athlon 4 core and 4 gb ram sitting around so have thrown it together. Can't wait to see his face this weekend when he arrives from Kentucky. He is unlucky with most things too.

Not exactly. Asus owns a company that among other things owns AsRock.
Design teams are different and the two companies actually compete with each other (ASUS has more standing, Asrock is cheaper, but in the end both have similar quality), they just share some hardware like the astek controllers for additional SATA and USB3 ports.

I'll put it this way if the Board is burned on the Mosfets then it is the board it if it got burned by the connectiors or the 24+8 looks burned then i would say PSU

I'm telling you with experince it is just a bad MSI board If i've gone through three with the same PSU Corsair AX850 it is just a sh*t board

When i sent it in they confirmed my observation the boards just can't handle overclocking or power managment

I guess it is a roll of the dice because I know someone here who has nothing but great things with MSI others cringe

Im not ruling out the PSU compatabilty part but from what he is saying that is the same thing i went through they might look fancy and all but i think the quality isn't there vs other brands

As I understand ASUS no longer owns ASRock.

Exactly right all brands have protractors and detractors and it really seems to be a roll of dice. I'm still waiting to build a system with an ASUS or EVGA brand mobo but (6) MSI and (1) ASRock systems are humming perfectly except for their operators ! lol
