For the same reason that this card,

Newegg.com - ZOTAC Synergy Edition ZT-60601-10L GeForce GT 610 2GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

isn't any faster than this one.

Newegg.com - ZOTAC ZT-60605-10L GeForce GT 610 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express x1 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

More memory on a video card doesn't make it faster, it makes it able to run at higher settings as there is more room to load textures and such into. It also doesn't help any on a low end card like the one above as the GPU/core isn't fast enough to make use of the extra memory.

In the case of the HD 540v in yours it is based on the older Mobility HD 4550M,

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v - Notebookcheck.net Tech

that itself was based on the the even older and slower desktop version, the HD 3450.

Unfortunately more memory on low end cards is nothing more than pure marketing, done to deceive and move lots of low end cards.
games like call of duty black ops, and test drive unlimited 2, i have to play on 600x800 on lowest possible textures for it to just be playable enough... ie 30fps... or lower.... i want ot get that fps up and make it more enjoyable and playable... also its the only thing i havent upgraded in this laptop. not looking for a meiricle, but something better.

If you go through with it at most you might see 5 FPS more, and not even likely that much; more like 1-2 FPS if you're lucky.

Unfortunately if you want to game on a laptop you have to plan and budget accordingly, as a laptop capable of playing the games you listed at decent settings and FPS costs a fair bit more than entry level laptops.

Be that as it may, for what those motherboards are going for and if they have the same video on them only with 1 GB of video memory you're going to be sadly disappointed by the severe lack of improvement.

hi thanks again! so that link you posted of the motherboard from ebay is the motherboard with the 1gb ati graphics card? and are you positive?

also i did upgrade the cpu. i put a first gen core i5 560m pga-988 socket type. i know 100% on that cause i bought a 2nd gen with ppga-988, and it dident fit so i had to send it back.... lol woops

also would these have the 1gb ati card?

    Dell Studio 1458 Motherboard 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay

    Genuine Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard System Board 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay

and which one would be better? a used or refurbished?
    Hi Quadrider10,

I have double-checked and verified that 'Part number 205RN' is designed to work with Studio 1458 and handles GPU with 1 GB VRAM.

All the following links seem to direct us to the motherboard with the same part number (205RN):
    Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard 205RN | eBay
    Dell Studio 1458 Motherboard 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay
    Genuine Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard System Board 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay

As long as the motherboard is identified with this part number (205RN), it should work with your laptop with 1GB graphics adapter.

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions; would be glad to assist.

is that the same motherboard as the 205RN? or are the GPU's Different on each?

so i was looking on the dell website on driver downloads, and my computer eaither just comes with the 5450 or 4530 GPU's the 5450 is faster and has more Vmem then mine, but the 4530 is the same speed with just 1 gb instead of 512 pr what i have. so that means i have to look for a 205RN motherboard, and just ask the seller if its the 5450 or 4530 versions?
