You have to find out what motherboard you have, then find the specs manual, and it should tell you what your upgrade options are.

    Google your motherboard.

The available processor upgrades may also require a bios update so checking your current bios version with the bios version recommended with the upgrade CPU.

Does your laptop manual say the CPU is replaceable? Some are BGA, ball grid array and soldered to the board.

Is it stupid if I say that I misplaced my manual?

This will help find your product #

Then do a search with your product # to find the specs for your machine. That will tell you your upgrade options.

There are different models of the dv7, but found this.

I see nothing of upgrading the cpu in that specs guide, I`m done. Goin to bed.

It seems like a waste to do that upgrade. It is not going to get you that much additional speed. If you want more speed get a SSD and leave the i5 CPU as it is.
