How to configure FANs?

    Doesnt the type of molex connector also control how fast it goes?

    If you have a fan on molex it can run either on 12v or 5v, depending on the wires it uses.
    Red is 5v, yellow is 12v (if I remember right)

    But then they run at one speed regardless of the temperature.
    You would need a fan controller to adjust the speed.

    If you have the fans hooked to the mainboard, you have 3pin and 4pin connectors.
    The fan speeds will be controlled by the mainboard.

    If the fan has at least three wires, it reports back the speed to the mainboard.

    Most current CPU fans have 4 wires.
    I'm not sure what the 4th wire does.

    Thanks. Sounds like its best to connect them to the motherboard when possible for automatic control.
