What is the make and model number of the new optical drive you purchased?
SATA 0 : ST3500413AS 500GB
SATA 1: none
The one I purchased is Samsung TS-L633 Optical DV Burner Samsung DVDRW 8X SATA TS-L633 (TSL633)
I just did a google search on your optical drive and found a known issue with Windows 7. It seems the drive needs a firmware update to be recognized in some cases. Take a read on these, and see if that helps:

Samsung TS-L633C Firmware SC01 Download - TechSpot
it says drive not found when trying to download
I suggest going to the Samsung website, locating your drive model, and checking to see if there is a firmware update that you can put on a USB stick and run independently.
When you get that "drive not found" message it usually means that the model number of the drive does not match the firmware version. That's where the A, B, C suffixes become important.
It also could mean that the drive is incompatible, defective, is not receiving power, or is not connected to the SATA port correctly.
