Why install winxp?? It's an old OS! Most likely it has a SATA controller. SATA isn't supported without tricks! Which SATA controller? winxp 32 or 64 bits?
For enter bios and set sata settings to ide or legacy mode (not ahci)
install winxp
Now do My Tech Blog: Enabling SATA Native Mode after XP Install
64 and I know I want to in stall xp first, then windows 7 later.... Don't ask I only have a windows xp bootable dick
If you have a legit Windows 7 Upgrade DVD & key you could use this tutorial
Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
If you have a Windows 7 product key underneath the laptop but no OS disc use these tutorials
1) Windows 7 Direct Download Links
NotePick the OS that goes with the Key . Doesn't matter if its x86 or x64
2) USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create
3) Clean Install Windows 7
