Looking to Upgrade to a New SSD

I was just commenting on what 99% of users will see and feel. The numbers that determine real world speed are highlighted above.

Gene, I own 8 SSDs ranging from a 2008 Gen1 Intel to an OCZ Vector. They are all very fast. And although they are in very different systems ranging from a 1.8GHz duo core with 2GB of RAM to an i7 with 8GB of RAM.

The 'felt speed' is more or less the same in all those systems. That's why I stopped looking at benchmarks. Yes I keep buying newer models like the Vector, but not because I expect an extraordinary performance jump. It is more out of academic curiosity.

Hello again, well i got my SSD today. so i am ready to install it. just a refresher WHS

1 install the SSD
2 Check Disk management to see if SSD is is recognized
3 Format SSD ?

Just install the SSD and run the Samsung migration software reboot, let the migration finish, reboot and change the SSD to the 2nd Boot device after the CD/DVD drive, and its done.?

You got it. No need to shrink. If the data fits, the tool will migrate the C partition and do proper alignments. Check the alignment anyhow once you run from the SSD - just to make sure. SSD Alignment

i also remember seeing something about Memory ? i have 8 Gigs DDR 3 installed

Hello again.... This is my Current boot and System Performance.

134676 / 1000 = 135 Seconds on boot up

i also timed it, 65 seconds to windows logo from power on, 60 seconds to full desktop load up.

I don't know how you plan to deal with the SSD now. I think you plan to migrate your current OS. If you follow the steps in this tutorial, you should have no problems. But if you have questions on any particular step, post back.

Regarding the 8GB of RAM: There are 2 files on your C partition that mirror the RAM. Those are the pagefile and the hiberfile. With 8GB of RAM they occupy 16 GB of SSD space (both together). Since few people use hibernation, I always recommend to get rid of the hiberfile. The command is powercfg -h off. Same for the pagefile. With 8GB of RAM, it will probably hardly ever be used. That's why I recommend to reduce it to 1GB. If you do these 2 actions, you save 15GB of space on your SSD. You can do that before you migrate your OS to the SSD or after.

Look at my prior posting regarding the 8GB of RAM. That may be something you want to consider. In the boot orde, set the SSD second, the CD/DVD reader should always be first. Once you are up and running, post back and tell us how you like it.
