The media refresh versions (sp1 U) are just the latest updated version.
Microsoft released updated media refresh images in May 2011. They have the post SP1 hotfix KB2534111 integrated as well. The original versions of the SP1 integrated DVDs don't allow any non ASCII characters when assigning the computer name, which has been fixed with this update.
Thanks Brink, I actually looked that up and saw that. In any case, I finished the second reinstall, and will be configuring the system back how I want over the next few days.
I am not going to mark this thread as solved, because I never did actually solve the original issue. However, I appreciate all the help I got with it and my other issues. Seriously, this was driving me up the wall. I wasn't eager to do a reinstall, but now that I did, and now that I can take that time to get everything configured right, it will be well worth the effort.
