It's OK if you want to try, but I would think that testing the hard drive first would be a better option.

Click the Start icon in Rufus to make a Bottable USB flash drive, then copy the WD HD diagnostic program to the USB drive. Boot the Vista Laptop with the USB Flash drive, NOT VISTA. Then run the WD diagnostic program.
Edit: If you copy & paste the embeded link from ImageShack your pic will show up here in the thread. Not just a link.

Edit: Never mind it give me some sort of error. I will take a picture of it next time as right now I am running the dlgdiag5 Extended Test.
It all depends on the size of the HD & what problems it finds. It could take an hour or several hours.

EDIT: I ran an extended test and this is what it give me. I am starting to think this is a hardrive issue. The only way I believe this can be fixed is by replacing the hardrive.
Hi, Sorry, I was out for dinner and just returned.
I would prefer that you select MS-DOS in the Rufus dropdown menu as shown in my screenshot. Then click on Start to create the bootable DOS pen drive. This is the first part - creating a bootable DOS pen drive.
You have already downloaded dlgdiag_5_20.zip. Is it not? Now extract it to a folder say WD DiagDOS.
Now copy these two files to the bootable DOS pen drive. At the end of it your bootable DOS pen drive should look like this.
Now boot your PC that has the Western digital drive on which you want to run the diagnostics with this pen drive.
Against the command prompt type dlgdiag5.exe and press enter to run the DOS program.
Follow the instructions given in the Western Digital website on running the test.
It is bed time for me now. So may be others will help you if in need.
EDIT: Ignore this. By the time I composed this reply and posted it in my sleepy mood, I find much has happened. And you have Doc helping - good hands. So I retire for the day..
