    Losing Drive After Sleep Mode

    Hi All,

This has me puzzled so hope you can help. Using the guides on this forum, I've installed and am running Win7 64 bit on an SSD.

I have two HDDs in the tower namely D:\ and E:\
I use D:\ to store system images of C:\ and E:\
E:\ is where I've relocated my User Profile (Docs, music, photos, videos etc) due to the limited size of the SSD.

My problem is that when returning from Sleep Mode, E:\ is "missing" in Windows Explorer, though it is visible in Device Manager. Scan for hardware changes doesn't work and the only way to use E:\ again is to reboot.

This only seems to affect E:\ and only with Sleep. If I use Hibernate there's no problem. I was hoping to use Sleep Mode as it's quicker. With an SSD Hibernate seems pretty redundant as to boot fresh is almost as quick.

    Any ideas

    Thanks all

    Sorry for the confusion.

There are three drives is total -
    1 SSD C:\
    2 HDD D:\ and E:\

C:\ The SSD has Windows installed

D:\ I use for image back ups

E:\ I use for storage. I have relocated my User Profile to this drive for music, docs, photos.
Did this due to the limited size of the SSD

    Hope that's a little clearer.

    Thanks

    Hi Centaur78,

Initially, there was no pagefile set up on any of the three drives. This was an oversight when I installed and set up the SSD. Have now set the pagefile to D:\, but alas the issue was still present.

Now this has opened a can of worms! The good news is that it seems Sleep Mode is now working, though I need to use it more.

It's come down to SATA controllers on the mobo and in which sockets I insert the SSD and HDDs Sata cables.

It's a Gigabyte mobo and there are 10 Sata sockets. 6 I believe are on AMD Southbridge controller and the remaining 4 are on a separate Gigabyte Controller. The system was previously set with C:| and D:\ on the AMD and E:\ on the Gigabyte.
All three are now on the same controller but had to move all around until I got a combination that worked as at one point the PC wouldn't boot when I plugged E:\ in to the AMD controller along with C:\ and D:\

The downside of this is that the boot time has increased dramatically. With just the SSD plugged in, boot time was around 17secs and got slightly longer when D:\ was plugged in. As soon as E:\ is connected as well, the boot time goes right up. Unplug E:\ from the AMD controller and boot time drops. This has me puzzled - and I hope this "explanation" hasn't puzzled you!

It a nutshell, it seems Sleep and Hibernate work, but boot times have increased significantly with having the SSD and 2 HDDs on the same AMD Southbridge Sata Controller. I have checked the bios and that is set to ahci.

This is a side issue to the original problem, but would appreciate your expertise on why the boot time has increased so much if you don't mind.

    Thanks

Have used both tools as suggested. Have renamed the diagnostic/troubleshooting zip to my username

What is the best procedure to get the results to you to analyse?

    Thanks again

    Hi Dumfy

the first tool is used to update your system specs... follow the details mentioned in the link to update "My system Specs" under your profile

You can upload the zip created by the second tool either here using the attachment icon above or put them in dropbox or skydrive or any other service and post a link here..

You've tried it without sleep and hibernate modes?

From Microsoft.com page on the subject:

I have a device that doesn't function properly after waking up from sleep or hibernate.

If you can, disconnect and reconnect the device or try restarting your computer. You can also make sure that you have the most current drivers for all of your devices. For more information, see Update drivers: recommended links.

That doesn't bode well for that drive working... I'd dump both sleep and hibernate, (I don't use either) take advantage of relatively fast SSD bootups instead, mine boots up and is ready (all OS/loaded extras done) in roughly 50 secs total, I have learned to live with it, I use Soluto for timing it and tweaking it.
