    Spilled coke in laptop keyboard..

I accidentally spilled some coke on my Acer Aspire laptop keyboard. I opened it up and cleaned what I could but now the keyboard either doesn't respond or presses buttons at random.

    It is a chiclet keyboard.

What options do I have? Will it help if I completely remove the keyboard and try to clean it completely or do I have to order a replacement keyboard?

I would remove it and soak it in distilled water and wipe it down. Allow plenty of drying time. Then try again to see if it's still sticky. I say distilled because tap water has minerals in it.

Using distilled water is a good idea, and adds an extra level of precaution, but I have just used tap water (well water too) and the spray attachment at the kitchen sink to clean beer off my keyboard (after disassembling it) and it was good as new without any residual (pun intended) effects.
Just be sure to let it dry completely before re-assembly. I put mine in the dish rack overnight!

I would not soak any part of the assembly with printed circuits or connectors. Streaming or spraying water over these is OK, but not submerged and soaking. I'd be worried about delamination.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try that. It is going to be a complicated operation though since i need to disassemble the laptop almost completely to get to the keyboard.

It depends on the individual laptop, of course, but usually it is just 4 or 5 screws that hold it in from the back, and then 4 plastic tabs that hold it in from the top. If that is the case you can remove it without a complete dis-assembly.

Because Coke has sugar in it I would use a little dish soap with the water and then rinse a lot. Stand it up on end when done rinsing and put a fan blowing on it over night.

Thanks for the link to the manual. It looks easy. I`ll give it a go when I can afford to have the laptop out of commission for a while.
