Can I disable file manager from automatically opening?

I have an external drive connected to my computer, and every time the machine wakes up from standby, a new instance of the file manager opens up. So after a while, I end up having like three or four file manager windows open. Is there a way to prevent file manager from opening automatically when it recognizes an external hard drive? Thanks.

You should find the option for this under "program access and defaults"

Sorry to be dense, but where do I access "program access and defaults?" Is that in the Control Panel somewhere?

OK, I guess I found it at Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults. But from there I couldn't see anywhere to change the way File Manager opens. Other thoughts? Thanks.

It would be under the action for what to do when a USB drive is connected, file manager will be the action not the trigger. Sorry i'm on a XP machine at work. I will give clearer instructions later when I get home.
