I am planning on upgrading my computer and definitely want to use a video card. I was wondering using said video card if I should just buy an older cpu with no integrated graphics support, and save a bit of money. Or if I should still purchase the newer chip with built in graphics?
Tbh, the saving on a non-iGpu chip is $30 at best. For the best performance stick with newer CPU's. Nothing older than Sandy Bridge.
What socket are you using? If 1155, a 2550K would be a good chip if you can find one.
Otherwise I wouldn't worry about the iGPU aspect.
It depends on the performance and amount of monitors you want as well.
If you plan on a discrete card then
Pros
yes you can save by getting a chip without an IGPU.
Cons
If you ever have issues with the discrete card, you have a backup

I doubt you'll save any money going with a CPU without some sort of integrated graphics. Tell us what system you are going to be building and we can give you options.
Also, what Dude said is right on the money. If your graphics card goes bad, it's a matter of switching the video cable to use the integrated GPU until you get another card installed.
I haven't gotten into looking at specific cpu's yet because I wanted to figure this out first, thanks for the tips. I was just thinking looking at prices that I could save like 30-50 bucks going with an older cpu but it probably doesn't matter if I just wait for a deal or something. I was just looking to built a ~$1000 system capable of decent-very good gaming/photo editing. I was looking tentatively at the AMD A10 5800k or an intel i5 3.1ghz? Also is there any benefit to matching an nvidia video card with an intel cpu or AMD and ATI? Or is that irrelevant? Also it would only ever be 1 monitor
