Please help me rationalize the x25-m Generation 2 80 gb

Guys, I am in a dilemma, it hurts my feelings to spend 300 on an 80 gb drive, but the speeds of the x25-m G2 are Amazing...

random read/write

I really want it, so some positive reinforcement would be helpful.

Don't pay $300....the price on these things keeps changing up and down at Newegg...
My 80G, X25-M G2 drive arrived yesterday...
I ordered it Monday, the 12th, from Newegg for $239.99 with free shipping and a free IcyDock 2.5" to 3.5" hard drive converter.

I'm waiting for my Win 7 release to arrive before I install it...

I just found it on ZipZoomFly for 245 after MIR, but I hate MIR :) I definitely am gonna have to wait for the right deal... suck...

You might consider the Patriot Torqx 128GB SSD. Looking at the performance charts in the links in your post above, it outperforms the Intel x25M 80GB and you get 48GB more space. I have seen it as low as $349 at Newegg, but it has currently jumped back up to $399.

Depending on what kind of deal you can get between the two, the Patriot may be worth considering if the price difference can shrink within a reasonable amount than the Intel x25M.

I contemplated the Patriot Torqx, but the random read write of small files is more important to me than the sequential write. And the 2nd generation Intels are about 5x faster on random write, and about 2x faster on random write (than the Torqx, it's 90x and 20x faster, respectively, than the Raptors!). Since the OS will be doing a lot more of writing and reading of small files (except during installation). When it does come to sequential read the Intels are on top as well (not by an amount that matters tho).. Of course the price per gig offends me greatly, but I'm buying for performance, and all it needs to be able to hold is the OS.

I would wait. SSDs just aren't ready yet. I would love to buy one myself but I just can't justify the price let alone for the amount of space you get for that price. I also think that they are just not to a point where they perform the way you would want them to just yet. I hear about problems with the current drives on the market so I would recommend just waiting a little longer to see what ends up happening with the price and bugs.

You may be right, but at close to $200 for the 80G, I couldn't wait anymore...
I've read a lot of good out there about the G2s...so we will see.
I'll try to report back in a week or so after I get everything running....

No, the price of the Patriot Torqx right now is just unacceptable right now.

Did you have the 64GB or 128GB Torqx model? The 128 is faster than the 64GB model. If you has the 128GB one, then I may just consider the G2 as well then. Either way, I'm just waiting on the prices to drop more. Just to high. :)

Partially True. The price sucks, but the performance of the Intel's hasn't ever been an issue. And some of the newer ones (non Intel) using the Indilex controller have overcome some of the issues as well.

The Performance of the Intel SSD's as an OS/App drive is amazing. I'll give a fully detailed examination once I install it all.
