    Second Harddrive Access Error/Homegroup


    Normally I'll search around for a little bit trying to see if anyone has any similar problems, but this is kinda weird and I think it's best if I just describe what happened outright.

    First off I'm running the RC1, Build 7100 downloaded legally from the Microsoft site before the cut off date, with a genuine key. My system setup is as follows:
    Gigabyte P965-S3 Mobo
    Intel Quad Core 2.4 Q6600
    Gskill Ram 4x2GB
    Nvidia 9600GSO
    WD250 (System Files)
    WD640 (Data)

    ok, the WD640 drive is where a majority of my data is kept, documents, picture etc. They're linked with my libraries. Last night I downloaded windows updates and restarted. After that my network stopped functioning properly with my Ubuntu machine, didn't recognize either machine on either side. I noticed when trying to mess with network that there was something known as "Homegroup" I thought this might be blocking the ubuntu machine because it wasn't w7, so I removed the homegroup. Didn't help my networking problem.

    Immediately after that I clicked the library button on the taskbar and was going to go to network, but I noticed the libraries were empty, and when I tried to click on them I got a D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied. I freaked out thinking all my data was gone and instantly went to the computer to check it, sure enough it showed two drives but one had no information about it. Tried to access it, same response. I right clicked on computer and went to manage, to look at the disk management to find both hard drives showing up, and the information on the other drive shows it as having all its space as free space. Now would be a good time to add that both drives are formatted as ntfs. I tried to change the drive path (to z: \ still nothing. I shut the computer off and switch sata cables with the dvd drive thinking it might just be the sata slot, dvd functions fine, drive still not. Even can access properties just shows up as 0 and can't check for errors because "Windows can't access the drive".

    I've attached some screenshots, hopefully someone somewhere can help me, I had everything on that drive and it's less than a year old there shouldn't be any problems with it especially since it was perfectly fine using those files 5 minutes before the homegroup thing. I read somewhere about taking ownership but I'm not sure how.

    Try to restore the system to before the updates were installed - the updates setup up a restore point before installing. Removing Homegroup wouldnt have caused the problem if the drives were inacessible before you removed it (as you say you did). Homegroup can be setup automatically when you install the OS if you select a home network but will only work between PC's that have W7 installed on them. W7 will find any PC 's with any OS's on the network so long as you have Network Discovery enabled, and they will show up in the Network folder.
    To check your network settings in W7 go to control panel - network and sharing centre - on the left side click on "Change advanced sharing options" and make sure you have network discovery enabled, and file and printer sharing turned on etc.
    You could check this before a system restore, but you may already have done so, and may need system restore to sort out the problem.

    Thanks for the reply, I'll try this first thing after work in the morning.

    On a positive note I took my harddrive from my linux machine and plugged it into this computer and it's reading the other drive just fine, full access to all my files can even copy from that drive onto the drive where Windows 7 system files are so I know my drive didn't fail, such a relief that is. The restore idea actually ran thru my head on the way to work but I was waiting to see if anyone had any input.

    I pre-ordered my student copy of Windows 7 Professional due out on the 22nd and I'm looking forward to downloading it from the digital river site. Such a relief my drive is in perfect working order, means I can use it with my new OS. Can't wait, so excited! xD

    Well the restore was successful, the drive was changed back to D : , but the same problem occurs, access denied. I know the homegroup doesn't have anything to do with it, but there is a homegroup user, maybe when I deleted it somehow it,the group swiped privileges from me? I don't know. I did manage to move the "important" files aka the files I'd like to access in the next week, to the main hard drive, so no harm no foul. But I'd still like to figure out what I did to cause this so I won't do it again with my new system.

    When you install the OS there is section where it sets up your network select public so it doesnt try to set up a Homegroup that way you wouldnt need to remove it (you can tell if its more than just an icon by clicking on it -if nothing shows up its just an icon an its not enabled)
    You can restart homegroup - Control Panel - Homegroup - select create a Homegroup and see if this brings back the access to the drive - having homegroup enabled shouldnt cause any problems, but having no PC 's with w7 installed may hinder creating it, but try in any case just to see.
    I got a feeling it has nothing to do with Homegroup - can you do this or do you know whether you have AHCI enabled in the bios under Sata configuration? If you have, W7 will load the intel driver for it during installation of W7, but you also need to install the intel matrix storage driver for it to function properly after installation. AHCI is an enhanced storage controller that lets you hotswap hardrives etc, and would possibly be the cause.
    I f you go into the bios, and its set to "sata as IDE" it wouldnt be the problem, but if its set to AHCI or Raid it would be the probem if you havent installed the intel matrix driver software.

    Yes it's purposely set to AHCI, It won't boot up as IDE, it freezes. Another problem I have no clue how to handle. Also should note the C : is installed on a Pata drive and the data drive is Sata

    Yes if you try changing to IDE it wont boot - I know that - you can only get it to run on the IDE setting if you set i t to IDE and reinstall the OS - thats why I said you will need to download and install the intel matrix storage driver software from the intel site and that should fix your problems.
    You will find it at the intel site - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx
    Select chipsets - chipset software - intel(R) matrix storage manager - Select Operating System - select W7RC1 (64bit OR 32 bit) - select drivers - select intel(R) matrix storage manager 8.9.0.1023 - download and install.
    (make sure you don't download the floppy configuration utility by mistake) - it will show up if you select utilities.

    Having C DRIVE with the Pata drive worries me a little, but as the current AHCI driver wont function properly without the matrix storage manager - I would think this will fix the problem, if it doesnt post back.

    I installed W7 Home Premium onto my new 1tb wd sata drive and immediately downloaded the intel matrix storage manager for it. It's not installing properly, says my computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Even tried running as admin same thing.

    Still won't read my other sata drive. Any suggestions?

    I actually just figured this out of my own. After following some advice from 2nd hard drive issue, how do u take ownership??? I right clicked the drive, went to properties, went to security then changed the owner to me. And everything works perfectly! Not sure where the hiccup happened but it's fixed!
