But why would they not exist? Surely ALL the sectors exist and are of great importance?

I've edtied some of my posts, check them over.
By not exist I mean ignoring. They still physically exist but the OS isn't aware of them.

I'd done the error checking already, no luck unfortunately.
and again, why would ignoring the problem solve the problem?

It won't solve it, just add, maybe, some time so one can make an image, get a new drive, etc.

Think of it as paving a pothole in the road, the hole is still there, but will be smooth until its repaved.

Whatever you do, before you do ANYTHING, BACKUP THE DRIVE! That way, if the drive is on the way out (and it probably is) or something else goes horribly wrong, you won't lose anything.

The WD Blacks are known for their reliability but there are three things in life you can't escape: death, taxes, and HDD failure. It's not a matter of if a drive will fail but, rather, when it will fail. And even the best will sometimes fail early or even be DOA. That's what warranties are for.

Yurp, as soon as the error checking finished doing absolutely nothing I began the backup process straight away.

and yeah I'm WAY ahead of you with the warranty. Thank god.
