What CPU/Motherboard are you looking at? If I were you, I would go with a 2x8GB kit, so in the future you would have the option of adding another 2x8GB kit IF you saw you were bumping up against the 16GB you currently have. Also, get something fairly common so 6-8 months down the road you can get another kit with the same timings and frequency if need be.

Here is what I would go with:

    Corsair Vengeance 16GB

    or

    G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 16GB

You could go with faster RAM if you think you need it, but 1600MHz is fine for 99.9% of people.

This is a better choice, your board only supports up to DDR3-1333MHz RAM.

This is what I use, the CAS is higher, but the price is cheaper.

Yes, buy a matching set of RAM.......can't stress this enough. Either a 4x4GB kit, or a 2x8GB kit. Whatever you decide on, don't put it off, RAM is only becoming more and more expensive. I always recommend either Corsair or G Skill RAM.......can't go wrong.
im looking to get a full 16 gb quad channal kit http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-19200cl11q-16gbzhd is the ram im eyeing up not sure if its amd compat though i should really look for a reasonable board first
I think KBrady is right on the money Emmet and look if you are going G Skill then that Tradesman fellow I pointed you in the direction of is just fantastic at sorting not only G Skill products but RAM in general.

He helped me with my Ivy Bridge build and the Sandy Bridge before that and matched the boards 1 Asus and the other Gigabyte with RAM needed for each brand.
For example if and when I do the Haswell I shall go straight there for what RAM I shall need despite what the board manufacturers listings are.:)
