Added new 2nd montior, Windows will not let me change drivers

Hi, I had 2 Dell monitors hooked up to my Windows 7 64-bit desktop. One was a Dell 2208 and the other was a 2007fp. I removed the 2007fp and replaced it with a newer Dell U2311HD.

The problem is, Windows will not let me remove the old 2007FP driver. I tried going into device manager and updating the driver with the correct Dell U2311HD driver that I downloaded from Dell, but it just says Windows already has the most recent driver(Dell 2007FP).

I even tried uninstalling and re-detecting...but that just changed it to a Windows PnP Generic driver...which also won't let me update.

In the Windows resolution screen where it shows the settings for both monitors, I still see the Dell 2007fp listed.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks

Weird isn't it? As you're finding out, auto driver install doesn't always work as we would like. Read post #6. Poster had a similar auto driver install issue as yours, although not a monitor but an audio driver. He was successful & might help you.

How Do I Stop Generic Driver Installation

I've used this Windows Seven Forum tutorial to prevent auto installing of graphic driver updates (if it's not broke, don't fix it!). I have software that doesn't work properly with updated drivers so I wanted to stop Win7 from even looking for updates for that hardware. That should prevent the auto install of the PnP driver. If the other post above don't help, try that, & see if you can uninstall the PnP driver out & install Dell driver.

    Hi 999cm999,

Its correctly suggested by GARoss to stop generic driver installation and manually install the driver.

You can download the driver for your monitor from the link below:

    http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER0121...00_R308519.exe

Also, if the issue persists try to update your graphic card driver to check if it helps in resolving the issue.

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

    Hi 999cm999, welcome to 7F! :)

I notice you have marked your thread solved, were you able to solve it on your own or through one of GARoss's links?
The reason I ask is, if anyone else that has a similar problem sees this thread they won't see the solution that helped you.

Could you elaborate on how you solved your problem??

My choice of action from one of GARoss's links:
i was having similar problem. i disabled the driver (device manager)then uninstalled the driver and deleted driver files.
then installed driver of my choice. restarted pc,driver i installed is there.
    hope it works.

When you went to install the new driver didn't Windows ask whether to install one that it found or did it ask you if you had a driver? That's what should happen when the operation system (OS) finds a new device.
