I was wondering if I would be doing harm to my drive by ejecting and unplugging while there is still power to the drive.
Is it basically the same as not ejecting?
In XP my drive would power off in Windows 7 it does not.
Do you get the pop-up saying it's safe to disconnect the drive? If you do I wouldn't worry about it.

Please let us know if it is a USB powered drive or externally powered drive. Also, when you select eject does the spinning stops in the drive.
If possible please check a different drive and in different USB port to isolate the issue.
If it was working earlier and problem recently started then you can perform system restore:

it is a non AC powered drive and keeps spinning but it does say safely eject.
Upon research I guess Windows did it for mobile phones/ipods/etc

Thanks for your reply. If the disks stop spinning and you receive the prompt that it is safe to eject the drive then it is safe to disconnect the drive with your convenience.
Once the disk stops spinning it should not damage the disk in any kind whether you disconnect it or not.

Thanks for sharing this information. You can go ahead and perform the registry tweak mentioned there to disable the power from the USB device as well.
However, if the drive stops spinning then removing the USB drive wire would not cause damage to the drive.
