Ok just to let you know this board has a lot of known issues reading some reviews I think I would ask for a refund Newegg.com - ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

One thing I saw you mentioned on your first post you said you change voltages and the ram went up to 8 gb is it possible your ram is running below voltage ? g-skill is supposed to be 1.65 volts if it is 1.5 volts that could be very well the issue ram is under volted
Very interesting that you said that....
What exactly in the ASRock bios would I check to be sure their 'voltage' was set right... there are a lot of different memory references in the bios

i think the one that i tweeked to that spec was the NB... whatever that exactly means hehehe

    wait... that is cpu voltage...
    nvm

You can check in the ram tabs if there on manual switch to auto or change the voltage yourself

Will do! I will let you know how it turns out.

Well, I set the DRAM to 1.65v and it didn't change the amount of 'usable' RAM

I decided to try flashing my bios to the newest version, and was hoping that would do the trick but now it says there is even less RAM that is 'usable'.
Specifically it says 8Gb installed (3.97 Gb usable)

Look I might be well out of order here but Absalom mate try the G Skill forum site "Tradesman" is a whizz with RAM stuff and as you have G Skill RAM in maybe he can give you some suggestions.

Much appreciated! I'll do some digging there! Thanks!
I'm sorta leaning toward the mobo having issues, but it wouldn't hurt to try!
