Pre-failure and Old-age questions -Drive headed for failure?

    Hi,

My SMART data reports pre-failure and old age in each category. It says overall health as "Passed". What do these mean and will a simple overwrite help it repair bad parts/sectors, or is this drive headed for failure in the very near future?

Is there anything I can do in the interim to mitigate the failure?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Smart is quite unreliable, i have a machine running an SSD that has failed smart since the day i put it together (all new components)

My advice would be to play safe and backup all data on the drive immediately then run some other tests/diagnostic software on the drive
Crystal disk can give some good info but personally i always go to the hdd manufacturers website and download their specific software for their brand of drive which IMO is going to give accurate results
Not knowing what disc you have i cant point you to any specific software but for example if you have a seagate drive you would need seatools which you can find here SeaTools | Seagate
You can also try running a windows disk check on the drive Disk Check

Have a read of this for a bit more info Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Some tests can be run from within windows others are bootable programs that will run at boot up

If your not sure or have any questions feel free to post back :)
