Key function not corresponding with keystrokes (among other things)

This has happened a number of times after I have let my kids use the laptop. After searching through all sorts of 'keyboard shortcut' guides for months now, I finally admit defeat and ask for help.
This happened just a couple of hours ago, and it's very frustrating as I'm sure it's something simple... just something I can't figure out. If I restart my laptop (Toshiba Sattelite. Windows 7 64 bit) all goes back to normal - I would like to get to the bottom of it though, and not HAVE to restart. When this happens there are several things that occur, and I think they must also correspond with several different commands:

-Mouse highlights whatever, and however many desktop icons it's hovered over. When I attempt to open something, it seems to open the other highlighted, or last highlighted files.
-Gesture scroll (right side of keyboard mouse) zooms in and out instead of scrolling up and down
-Keys do not do what they are supposed to do. For example, when I tried to search for solutions online and pressed the 'H' key, it opened a new tab showing my 'History'. There was another key which closed tabs whenever I pressed it. Yet another opened my 'My Pictures' file.
-When I try to move things around the desktop, the shortcut just keeps being copied and I end up with 2 or 3 or 4 of the same icon with the added declaration "copy"
-Screen (view) is all scrunched up in the middle of the screen with at least an inch on either side of blackness

They are the main ones. I am pretty sure they are all in response to some kind of combined keystroke commands, but bugger if I can find the corresponding commands online. Does anyone know of any of these problems? how they are started and how they can be disabled? I know I said restarting my laptop puts things back to normal... but I'm concerned that one day it wont work. If the commands are accidentally saved, and I'll have no idea how, and no way of reaching out to anyone to help fix it.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond

Hi there .. Welcome to Seven Forums .. There is a possibility that there have been some specific functions that have been assigned to different keys. Is your Function Keys working properly ? Maybe the easiest solution would be a Restore point before this happened

Thankyou, and yes, a restore would be my solution if logging off/restarting didn't work - luckily things haven't yet become that dire :) What I'm trying to find out is if anyone knows, or can direct me to information that includes the specific codes that correspond with the functions I have described. Not being very tech savvy, it drives me crazy that I have to basically shut down my pc to fix (what must be) such a simple thing! What's more baffling is that I can't find the relevant info online... perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place? I don't know. I would like to learn though.
