External drive intermittently recognized by computer

Hi, I'm new to forum. Can't seem to solve this issue. I have a Glyph external hard drive, connected via an eSata expansion card. The problem is, my computer only occasionally recognizes it. I have to go to Device Manager and run a new hardware scan, then it will be recognized and I can use it. Sometimes after I do this, it will be recognized a few times, but that will stop and then I'll need to run another new hardware scan. The drive's letter name is L. The only other drive I have is an internal one, no problems there. I have some plug-ins, including two dongles. And I use a Thumb drive off and on. Under Storage there are a number of other drive letters listed, I assume for the various devices I occasionally hook up, like a camera. I tried changing the pathway name, but all that did was cause my computer to suddenly shut off!

    Thanks, michael

Drivers are up to date. I tried the troubleshooters you recommended, but the problem is still there.

Michael sorry late reply but I don't know what model Glyph you have - I have to say I have never heard of this brand before but looking on the site it does give formatting instructions and eSATA card info.
