Single channel DDR2 but can run Dual channel

    Hi,

My system is abit IP35 quad core 2 q6600 running 4gb of RAM, all the same spec.

    Win 7 64bit and Win 7 32 bit partitions.

I recently added 64 bit partition to run more RAM, so the slots 2 and 4 will have gotton dust in it as it was unused for ages.

If I wiggle the slot 4 in sometimes I get 8gb and dual channel RAM.

At the moment I have single channel and on 4gb, does that mean I am using 1gb of each of the 4 slots.

    The ram is ddr2 2gb sticks x 4.

Do I need to clean the slot?

also Java based apps are crashing on 32bit and 64 bit.

Just clean the slot? what with, whats the best approach?

    Thanks

    Neil.

So magically I have 8gb and dual channel back.

But on the SPD tab the program only shows 2 slots in use.

Whats going on in my PC is it working like it should?

The best thing to clean the slots is to use a can of compressed air. You should give your entire computer a blast of it about every six months. More often if it is on the floor.

CPUZ is showing 8 GB dual channel, but only two slots? Have you expanded the drop down on the SPD tab that shows the slot information? It doesn't show slots three and four? What does Windows report your RAM to be? Is your RAM voltage correct in the BIOS?

It's really weird that those slots don't show up.

Of to get a can of compressed air, how do I know what is the correct volatage for 4 slots with 2 gb ddr2 in them?

In Cpu-z on the SPD tab, I do have information on all 4 slots, they all read the same information as the jpeg above.

Back to square 1, only using slots 1 and 2, win 7 shows 4gb only, then slots have had compressed air blown through them.

So I am getting intermittant use of 8gb, is this a bios volatage setting or some speed setting I need to change?

It sounds like you have a flaky motherboard to me. Is it still under warranty?

If you aren't overclocking, the BIOS RAM voltage can usually be safely left at the "auto" setting. There's really no need to increase it for normal use. Just make sure that if it isn't set to auto, that is is no higher then the rated voltage on your RAM sticks.

All the RAM specs will be on a label on each DIMM (dual Inline Memory Module) for timings and voltage. Have you tried running memtest 86+?

CPU-Z is not perfect for all motherboards. Try another tool, HWInfo.
