    usb 2 ports work intermitently

have gigabyte ga-990fxa-ud5 with amd fx-8150 running win7 pro 64 bit. about 2 months ago usb mouse and keyboard quit working. a power reset and they would work again for a few days. i thought it was my old logitech wireless usb mouse and keyboard so got a new one. same problem. i have also discovered that when this happens all usb 2 ports quit working and not only for mouse and keyboard but any other device i plug in. i suspected a win update as the cause but uninstall of last few months has made no difference. also have cleaned out hidden and ghost usb drivers in device manager using Device Manager : Hidden Devices. any help much appreciated.

How many Hubs do you have, excluding USB 3.0, and did you use any of them for charging battery powered devices?

Added: Check the Gigabytes support site and see if there's an update for a USB 2.0/2.01 driver update as well as a BIOS update. If neither of these fix the problem, the motherboard may be toast.

You might try checking the motherboard temperatures. If the Southbridge is getting hot, it may shutdown peripherals. But I would think you'd get a BSOD. Also, run Malwarebytes' Antimalware scan. Download the free version and do NOT select the trial or registration when run. Make sure you install MBAM only and not any PUPs that may be included with the install. On startup, it will update malware signatures for the scan. Let that compete then run a full scan.

Also, run the SF Diagnostic Tool and follow the directions to zip and attach the file to your next message. This will gather information on your system, drivers and programs. This may help identify a problem. Be sure to use the Grab All button.
