How to buy a proper RAM ?

Please help me i have a 2GB ram installed in my PC. I am thinking of putting a 4GB ram. But i have only 2 slots in which the DDR2 Ram in installed in slot 2. Does that mean that i can put only DDD2 ram but not DDR3 ram?

    My system specs:
    Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60 GHz each
    2GB DDR2 Ram
    Two slots for Ram
    32-bit Windows 7 ultimate

I know that i am using 32 bit but i will install 64-bit after getting a 4 GB ram.

Best is to scan with the Crucial scanner. Then you know exactly what you need. And you can buy the Dimms right there - if you like the price.

Use the Crucial System Scanner software to find out what type of memory is in your computer

    You can only use ddr2.

And you don`t have to go to 64 bit, with only 4 GBs of ram, you`d be wasting your time, leave it at 32 bit.

If you were ever to go to 8 GBs total, then you would install 64 bit.

But ddr2 is expensive and not really worth the effort.

Thanks addam but can I put a 2 gb ram of different frequency in the other slot because the installed ram is of 333 mHz. So can I put a ddr2 ram with 400 mhz of frequency?

The short answer is maybe. However, the modules will run at the SLOWEST compatible speed of all modules. Compatible is the key word. The speed will be reduced to 333mHz (or less) for all modules when the BIOS attempts to find common speeds and timings. If the BIOS can't find a match, it will either disable the module or error out (fail to boot).
