    Windows can't find drivers

Hi, I got a new USB headset (the model is irrelevant) that is plug 'n play. It works PERFECTLY on ANY other computer I plug it into except my main. All PCs are using Windows 7 x64, no drivers (as it works out of the box). All PCs that it functions on finds the driver through Windows Update and installs it. On my main it detects the same device yet finds nothing. I have NO idea how that's possible but I cannot use the headset on my main PC as a result. The subsequent error is error 28 in the Device Manager.

Any help in the matter would be much appreciated!

Go to Start > and type "Change Device" in the search bar.
Click on "Change Device Installation Settings"

I will bet that the setting on your machine is "Never Install Driver Software from Windows Update".

It is set to automatic. Whenever I plug in the device it doesn't make the device connected sound, it makes some other weird sound instead and instantly fails to install. I feel like it's not even trying to find the driver and gives up.

EDIT: Even if I copy the drivers used (Microsoft's drivers) on one the working PCs and forcibly install it my PC still refuses to accept the device. This makes no sense to me...

    Some suggestions:

    • Try the device in another USB port.
    • If using a USB 3 port, use a USB 2 port.
    • Reset the USB stack: In Device Manager > Uninstall all the devices under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" > restart the computer and let Windows reinstall everything fresh.

If you have any USB 3 controllers you may need to reinstall their drivers, or just leave them alone.

Yeah, I just stumbled onto that myself. I am "attempting" that now. On my first go it was unable to recognize a simple keyboard and mouse thereafter (this is USB 2.0 slots on everything). It's amazing how it cannot find a simple keyboard and mouse driver after...
