    Unable to access my Maxtor!!!

I can see my 40 gig Maxtor usb drive sitting on my desktop, but alas I cannot access the contents, in fact I cannot even right click the drive to get to properties, if I double click the icon in my computer the whole desktop screen of icons disappears for a few seconds then all is normal. I have changed usb lead, to no avail, have used a different usb port, no difference, so I come to my forum for help, as always it will be appreciated.

    what has happened?
The drive lost its previous formatting -- often due to data errors, and often a sign of the drive failing.

You might be able to recreate the original partition(s) using something like Minitool Partition Wizard -- which is a free download.

If that doesn't work, you will probably need to use a data recovery app (like RecoverMyFiles) to find your data and copy it to a working drive.

Mark Phelps, thanks for that, either way the 40 gig drive was 90% full, seems the way to go is to purchase some software!

It may be possible to recover the lost partition with the Partition Recovery Wizard in MiniTools Partition Wizard Home Edition 8.1.1. Free download Magic Partition Manager Software, partition magic alternative, free partition magic, partition magic Windows 7 and server partition software - Partition Wizard Online . Try that.

Proceed to the topic Recovery with Partition Wizard: SanDisk Cruzer Blade 16GB ( in your case it will be your external hard drive) in Recover a flash drive turned RAW – Partition Wizard and TestDisk.

Update. Great news, tried about three pieces of software, but limited only to 2 gig demo, didn't want to pay $69 for the full version, anyway went to the piriform website and downloaded free "Recuva" 6 hours later retreived all 37 gig of my Maxtor........Impressive. So now I have a 40 Gig Maxtor I want to format to FAT 32/ NTFS any ideas? as always thoughts appreciated.

Glad you were able to retrieve all your data using Recuva. That would have meant that you had had to copy that much data into another external drive and I wonder whether you could get them all with their original file names.( I had never used it or tried it.:))

And yes, most of the paid software can only retrieve 1GB of data free.

Hmmm... you could have tried Partition Recovery Wizard. If it was able to see all your files, you only have to give a go ahead command and you would have got your Maxtor drive as it was before and there would have been no need to copy that much data elsewhere. Even now you can try it.

Now, if you want to format I would again suggest MiniTools Partition Wizard. When you install you can try its Partition Recovery Wizard in it too for the heck of it, get to know it and then go ahead with formatting as you like.

Jumanji: Got all the file names, jpegs, folders, mp3's played a few of them early this morning checking for any distortion, all is well, haven't checked my hundred's of jpegs for pixellation, but the 50 or so I checked considering the file size were good.
Will give that Minitools Partition Wizard a whirl, hopefully with a good result. Cheers Jumanji
