    Hi everyone.

Really need your help. Have a customers laptop which is a hp dv7. It tries to power on but shuts down striaght away.

It will only does this which the battery and charger in. If you have out the battery it wont do anything.

I have stripped down the laptop multiple times to check all cables including changing thw DC jack. The motherboard is getting power. If needed I can upload a video.

Will change the motherboard but just want to make sure.

have you tried a different battery charger? maybe its not giving enough power to power it up, and its using both the batterys remaining charge and what its kicking out, but the low voltage detection kicks in?

Any other help would be great please.

Also when you leave the charger in for a length of time it will power on with the battery in it. But will not charge the battery. So it is powering on now.

then id say it has dodgy capacitors that arent or struggling to hold voltage. its a bit beyond my technical knowhow to suggest a test for that lol

Just doesnt seem to be them though. The fact that when the battery is out there is no power at all. To test them I would have to desolder the capacitors out and check to see if they hold the voltage. But I just cant get my head around it.

This is a quite common HP "feature", I've had about the same with all DV-7 laptops I've had (total of three).

HP recommends for this a so called "total power reset". I can confirm it has helped me to get a DV-7 to work again quite often.

    Try this:
    • Disconnect battery, charger and all external devices
    • Press and hold down the power button for at least 20 seconds
    • Connect the charger, boot
    • After successful boot, shut down
    • Insert the battery (power cord still connected), boot
    • After successful boot, shut down
    • Reconnect external devices

Notice that my instructions differ slightly from the instructions from HP (Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset | HP® Support). My instructions are based on my own experience with various methods and have as mentioned above worked for me.

Thanks for the reply. But unfortunately I have tried this. But when the battery is out it wont do anything for me what so ever. Any ideas why.

Just noticed this beside the CPU and battery connector. When battery is in there is a slight click coming from this area.
