Loud Fan Noise on Sony Vaio EB3

    Hello there

I have a 3 year old Sony Vaio EB3 laptop, which recently has begun to make a very loud noise, which I have managed to pinpoint to the fans in the system. After looking around online, I have discovered that there are numerous issues people have had in the past with the Sony Vaio series of laptops to do with the fans making too much noise.

After following advice I had seen on other posts, I decided to take my laptop apart and see if I could fix the fan myself. This is something that is not new to me - I have taken off the bottom of the laptop in the past to clean the fans with compressed air. However, after watching Youtube videos such as this one ( Sony Vaio E series - Disassembly and fan cleaning - YouTube ), I hit a standstill - the part where he takes off the fan, I cannot do. For me, the copper metal which leads out from the fan is stuck too the main board.

My main question is this - is it possible for components in a laptop to melt together? The piece which I have circled in red is the piece I believe to be the problem that is keeping the fan attached to the main board.

If it is possible, is there a solution I can turn to to fix the fan in my laptop? It currently sounds like a lawnmower is being crushed in my laptop.

    Thanks in advance!

Although the picture isn't working, you should still be able to click on the icon to link to the imgur website.

A development of the problem - is it possible that the thermal paste on the heat sink is stuck to the motherboard?

Sorry if I'm embarrassing myself, I honestly have no idea what I am looking at.

    Pazzaar,
Welcome to SF. If you can clean the fans as well make sure the fan is spinning properly then that's half the battle. Could the bearing be bad on the cooler fan and maybe the whole cooler fan assemble should be replaced? Are you using a laptop cooler or pad?

I would think that the thermal compound or tape could be what's giving resistance. You can try light constant pressure while lightly heating to get the material to loosen and release.

I too would say clean the fans and or replace the bearings if you can and know how.

Thanks linn, I will give that a go. I was thinking if I was unable to find out what the problem with the fan was (such as the blades hitting an object which was easily removable), then I would replace the thing entirely - its just a case of getting it to come loose!

For heating it up, would a hairdryer be sufficient? Will the thermal paste become damaged if I take apart the two objects it is holding together?

    Thanks!

I think a hair dryer should work or you could simply place near a direct sunlight window an have the sun hit it for say an hour.
When you separate the parts the material is done and will need to be removed and the surfaces prepped for new material and reattached.
