USB transfer hangs at 5 seconds to completion

Recently my USB drive that i have been using all this while hangs at 5 seconds to completion. I have to wait more than a minute for it to finish. I also tried cancelling the copying of the file and this will also take a minute or two to cancel. However after cancellation, the file surprisingly is successfully copied onto the USB drive.

I've googled everywhere for a solution but I couldn't get it to work. The USB drive is in NTFS format. I also tried installing KB976972 hotfix but it wasn't succesfull as i am not using an nVIDIA Chipset. I also updated all USB drivers from my laptop manufacturers website but the problem still occurs.

Is it a sign of a dieing drive?

I've noticed the count-down timer is rarely accurate, especially with big files, >100MB. I have copied HD videos files over 2GB and the time says 100%, but hangs at that for 10-30 seconds before it is done.

You can run a disk check on it though. With it connected, open Computer, right click the drive, then Properties/Tools/Check Now. In the pop up check both boxes then start. It can take a long time to finish.

    You can try this too...
Try this too, download this: CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World and open the program and follow the steps in this snip.

This may give you a little bit of time, but the drive should be replaced soon.

I know the timer is not accurate. But usually transfers will not hang at the last 5 seconds (95%) for a few minutes. It was more than 10-30 secs.

I have already run disc check with both options on and everything turns out to be fine. I will check the status by downloading that software. What are the functions for all three sliders?

I don't know whether they reset the SMART tags or maps out bad sectors. If you have a green Good button, no need to do anything with it.

I think the CrystalDiskInfo is for HDDs because it did not detect any usb pendrive.

Oh, I was unaware you are talking about a USB flash drive.
