Can you right click on the External Storage drive shown in error in Devices and Printers, run its Troubleshooter?

    Greg,

After I reconnected the external drive, the question mark went away. However, there was still an exclamation mark on the laptop. I ran the troubleshooter on it and was led to another troubleshooter, and then another - - -

    Long story short:

WD SES DEVICE DRIVER SOFTWARE NOT SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED.

Please consult with device manufacturer for assistance in getting the device installed.

Do you have a shortcut for that?

I've given you a dozen steps which remain unaddressed including how to get the drivers. I'd start at the top.

Open Device manager and expand all entries - report any entries that have an next to the name.

Continue down through the entire device list, there might be more than one.
