How do I shut down properly?

Sometimes my laptop doesn't shutdown at all. When it happened for the first time I was frightened and I left it all by itself to shut down. It didn't shutdown even after 19 Hours I called a local technician and he came all along just to remove my battery and restart it. It doesn't happen much but once in a month or two when I confuse my system before shutdown, it doesn't shutdown at all. I was told not to remove the battery like that hardware guy by my uncle. Does anyone know why this happens and what should we do when that happens?

To shutdown properly, go to the Start menu and click shut down.

I wouldn't remove the battery. If the PC does not shutdown normally, hold the power button down for about 10 seconds and it will shutdown. This is not a preferred way to do it, but a few times will not hurt you PC.

    hi User31,
that is what I do, but as I already mentioned it above it never shuts down sometimes if it gets laggy before shutdown.

Any computer shuts down better if you close all programs that are running.
    Examples:
Any games, programs, browsers, Office, Word ect.
Then go to Start/Shutdown. Don't worry about your security programs as long as they are not doing any scans.
If Windows 7 has to shut down all those things it will take some time before a proper shut down.

Could be hardware related issue. or a virus. run some scans make sure its not infected, and any free tool to check hardware. computers are like cars you gotta maintain em like one. :)
