    Query re PCI slots

I have an Asus P8Z77-V board and I want to add a four port 3.0USB card to supplement the originals.
Now in my pic the top slot (pic is 90 degrees to how it sits in the machine) for this card (yellow circle) is so sloppy fitting the machine will not pick it up as detected. So I want to swap stuff around and try the other slot (white circle).
Problem is the GTX 650 is in slot 2 and sits over the white one and I am thinking of using the bottom slot (1) for it which currently has the Xonar sound card in it. Fitting the Xonar card will give some clearance for the USB card to be fitted if the GPU gives enough clearance at the bottom slot (1).
My query is that they are different colours and although in the board specs it says they are
PCI Express 2.0/3.0 and I am not sure if this means that one is 2.0 and the other 3.0. So can someone tell me if I can fit the graphics card in that bottom slot (1) if I have enough clearance for stuff below it because I seem to remember trying against that slot before and it blotted out those other sockets below (blue circle).

Going by the color coding Asus has used in the past (sadly, inconsistently), that x16 black slot is could be paired with the x16 blue slot your GPU is in, meaning they would share x16 lanes between them, with the black one running no more than x8 when used, even if the x16 blue slot was empty. If so, using the black slot would cut your x16 blue slot to x8 lanes, possibly impairing graphics performance. The white slot is probably running independently at x4 (even though it is physically x16 long) and using it would be less likely to interfere with your GPU. I would try it first.

Thanks Jeannie I will try the GPU in the white PCI and the Xonar I the blue one then and hope I get enough clearance on the bottom sockets form the GPU.:)

Yikes! I'm sorry, I must not have been clear. Your GPU needs x16 lanes so it needs to stay in the blue slot. The Xonar needs only x1 lane so put it in the white slot.

I know it will cost you more money, but why not get a pci usb card instead of using the mini pcie one.

Looks like that is what I shall have to do Badger cos what Jeannie says about the slots then the GTX will have to stay so obscuring that small slot - what a bummer!!

So I shall have to put $70 down to experience eh?

Thanks to you both for the help anyway:)

Can you take a good, full size pic of your actual computer and upload it here? Don't downsize it.

Ok Gary I will send a pic of the machine in situ and the blank board and you can see my predicament.

Have you tried the new card in the white slot yet? A 1x card will work just fine in a longer slot. My Xonar Essence STX (not the same as your Xonar) is a 1x card and works just fine in a x16 long slot that runs at up to 4x.

Ok will try it in there but as in my pic I ma tad concerned as to whether the tag will not allow fitting the card into the white slot - am at work right now (meal break )
