I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

    Hi transrikroll,

What exactly is the error code you get when you run WD's Datalifeguard Diagnostics?

Please rerun the test but now use Datalifeguard Diagnostics for DOS, to take Windows out of the equation.

With Rufus Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way , create a bootable MSDOS pen drive.

Download dlgdiag_5_21.zip WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD VelociRaptor and extract the contents to the bootable msdos pen drive you had created.

Boot from the pen drive and against the command prompt type dlgdiag5.exe and press enter to run it.

Please note the error code and read against this WD Support / Knowledge Base / Diagnostic Error Codes

If you encounter the same error code more than once after re-testing, create an RMA.

EDIT: What Recovery software have you used? Just for information.
