Fresh install: Touchpad pointer lost after sleep. randomly.

Guys I've been using this little Thinkpad x120e for years: I can't find a replacement that does as much as well .
I just did a fresh install of win7 x64 home premium on a new samsung 840 pro ssd. it all works swell.

except today: doing absolutely nothing unusual, running on battery, I left my unit closed for a while, came back, opened, started to work, and the cursor was gone. Not just hard to see, but gone. had to use keys to migrate my way out of everything safely and power down to get it back.
I checked the System logs for a related error but see none. I have errors, but nothing relating to the touchpad.

the thinkpad of course uses the combo joystick and touchpad with buttons for each. the driver I chose to install on purpose however is the generic microsoft 'mouse' driver. I have always used it that way since I bought the system because the Ultranav software/firmware is buggy [long story]. never had this issue before now.

how to troubleshoot? logically this would seem to be a power policy thing, but why the random occurrence? I've been using it every day on battery, and every day plugged in also. first occurrence. no updates to the driver: I don't allow auto updates

The graphics driver is also involved. It could be a conflict with the graphics driver or a problem with the graphics driver.

Are you using the same graphics driver as before?
Have you tried uninstalling the mouse and joystick from Device manager and rebooting? (they will be reinstalled with the generic Windows driver)
The order you install drivers can make a difference sometimes.

actually it was on the generic ps/2 mouse driver when it bombed. I don't like some of the behavior of the ultranav driver... trying to turn everything annoying off and haven't quite succeeded.
so, reversed course, reinstalled the ultranav. so far its behaving ok.

the gpu is radeon apu E-350/6310 with the latest stable release. looks ok

Uninstall and let it reinstall. You'd be amazed how many times that works.
