Libre Office is the modern version of Open Office. Open Office had not been maintained for a while and is backlevel. There were a lot of quarrels and most people left to go with Libre Office. Open Office is now trying to catch up but I would not trust it.

Booz: The PC has the saved mem stick stuff (pictures mostly) downloaded on it. I need to delete stuff as the internal HD is almost full. That is why I am downloading pics to the portable HD. Then I have to find out the best/safest way to totally remove the deleted pics from hard drive to free up space. I have used disk clean up and disk defrag programs.

I do have the product key somewhere. Would have to find it. Why would I need it?

I'll be back online later on today. :)

Once you're happy the files are backed up on the external HDD you should just be able to delete them, no need for third party programs to remove data files.

If you've decommissioned your copy of Office you can install it on your setup now and activate it with you product key, you don't need to purchase it again. Providing there is somewhere you can download it from that is as I presume you don't have a hard copy. Which version of Office were you running?

Success! I found the way to copy all of the pics on the mem stick to the portable HD!!!!! Thanks all for your help and patience.

Next, I will want to permanently remove some of the files copied to free up space on the internal HD. I saw a suggestion of "Eraser" program. Any comments or suggestions?

Don't use a program - you never know what it does. Just delete them manually.

But you should think about keeping your pics in 2 places - just 1 copy of them is too dangerous. Keep an eye on these sticks. They go very often on sale. The 4th one (PNY) sold for $43 the other day. This is a good stick - I have one. This Mint demo was made from it.

Hi WHS, Actually they are saved now in two places (3 if you count that they are still on my internal hard drive). The pics are on both the thumb drive and the portable HD.

I have 4 64GB thumb drives, bought in ignorance as to how small 64 GB actually is these days! I don't think I'll need the 128 GB PNY, but thank you for the link, info and reply.

As to cleaning the pics off of the internal HD, deleting them doesn't totally remove them. (So I've learned.) I need to erase them permanently from the drive in order to make room. If you know of something different, please share your knowledge. Thanks!

If you delete the pics, you make room. They may still be there but the space is tagged as available space and can be reused.

Don't venture into any funny programs. You may end up with a big mess.

PS: The have 240 and 480GB sticks now - for real money.
