USB ports not working for iPhone or Wifi but work for KB and mouse

    Hello!

Thank you lovely people for being helpful. You all deserve very good karma.

A few months ago my wireless adaptor started sporadically not working, and I would unplug and replug and it would work. Finally it stopped working altogether. When I plug it in it says at the bottom right: Installing drivers... for a few sec then says drivers could not be installed. But I already had the drivers! I also notice it will say "Linksys Wireless Adapter #9". Number 9? I only have one! Side note: the lights on the adapter do come on.

I downloaded the drivers for the Linksys USB wireless adaptor and tried to install them, but it said they were already current. I tried another wireless adapter and got the same error. I tried starting the PC in safe mode and the problem persisted.

I then noticed that my iPhone wouldn't charge either, and it gave the same error message about drivers. None of the USB ports are working for the wireless adapter or the iPhone. However the keyboard and mouse are working ok in some of the ports.

After starting it in safe mode and running all the antivirus and spyware scans I have, as well as an optimizer program, it actually started working for a little while, but soon stopped again. Another thing I tried was shutting down, unplugging all ports, letting it sit for a few minutes and starting it up again. That worked once but hasn't worked several other times.

I have tried researching this problem and only gave myself a headache. I could really use the advice of some people who know this stuff well.

Thank you very much and have a good day!

Hello and welcome Lonangus mate some sytem specs would be really helpful if we are to help out
System Info - See Your System Specs

Now the problem at first glance looks to be with the USB ports so hence we need to know the specs so that we can check for drivers etc.

I am wondering what that opitmiser program is you have got too as I distrust anything that promises better performance when it can be done with help from this forums members without risking downloading a ton of crappy software.
One thing you can do straight away in safe mode if necessary are these

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary use the options /f and /r in Option2

    But specs please.

    Thank you!!

I tried the Check Disk and System File Checker. Neither one reported anything. The problem is still there.

    Here are my system specs.

Ok Loganus this seems to be a much older board than I expected and maybe the ports are just worn out - I have no way of telling that except by looking .

What you can do is to download the USB drivers from this site - it says XP but they are the only ones available as you will see and you could try the chipset - Ethernet but make sure you download the correct bit one (I have circled it in the pic)

    Thank you for the advice.

I tried both of those and neither would start. I unzipped the USB drivers and clicked "Setup". It started a dialog box which prompted me to continue. There was a brief flash of some small window which instantly closed. Then it just put a little icon down at the bottom of my screen, like any open program, but didn't start anything else. When I clicked on the icon nothing happened. I let it sit for a while and nothing happened.

I made sure to get the Ethernet one you circled. The Ethernet one unizipped, prompted me to continue, then nothing happened. I let it sit for a while and nothing.

I restarted a couple times and the same thing happened.

I tried going into Device Manager and going into the "USB root hub", "USB Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Controller" and so on and clicking "properties" and going into "update drivers", and manually browsing to the unzipped USB drivers folder. It said for each of them: the most current driver is already installed. But I think they said the drivers were from 2006, and the ones on the site 2008...

By the way, that optimizer program is called Advanced System Care. I also ran one called CC Cleaner.

I tried those anti-malware programs and nothing changed.

The programs I ran before were Ad-Aware, MS Security Essentials, and Spybot.

I got that USB drivers update file to run, and it said it updated... nothing.

An important clue I realized is that the top USB ports don't work either. Those aren't part of the board, they're part of the case.

Thanks for your continuing help with this! :)

Longangus mate can we have some system specs please and maybe a shot of the Device Manager - opened out to show the interwork connections.

For specs can you run HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download < get the right bit version and close the right hand window and in the left open out those devices in that left hand window so that we can make sure we have the right drivers based on what the devices are specified.

Ok. I have been working on this ridiculous project.. every time I try something I run into another problem! :P

I got the pictures of the device manager and the hardware info program.

Once I saw what the ethernet device was I looked for drivers. I found these:

DriverMax - Network Adapters - Realtek - Download Realtek RTL8129 PCI Fast Ethernet NIC Computer Driver Update

which I took a screenshot of the file. But it didn't install.

    Thanks for the help.
